PAC-II Patriot System

"Overkill!" I hear you mutter to yourself....

"That $1,000,000 missile to take out a little J-10..?!? or a few maggoty soviet era transport helis ?!..Typical BOMSF!..."

No.

This will not target the enemy air, its primary role is to deal with tactical and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Big ones.

The type that can really spoil your day.

"So where are the enemies missiles then....?" you retort with the smug look of a rat feasting on turds.

On top of a big assed MAZ 543 chassis, I reply.

Proudly.

Texture Creation Techniques

'Pologies for bein' out of the loop for a few days with a hand injury and ghetto cottage refurb commitments. I do , however, want to show you a technique I stumbled across to make realistic base textures to make objects appear more detailed than they already are.

You may have seen the start of this with some of the wheels a few posts ago. Above are two shots of some tank tracks, the first one being rendered [created] as if there is no material and is shot under a cloudy sky. That gives the deep areas crisp definition and nice shadows. Thats called Light Tracer.

The next shot is done with a polished concrete material and this time rendered under Mental Ray. Notice how much more realistic and softer the element appears. So, I'm in Photoshop messing with these two trying to pick which is best, can I blend them and I go to the Blending Options on the layers panel in PS and move the sliders at the base. This gives a crackin base texture for a tank tread, with very little extra to be added, change of colour, some dirt and scratches, and I'm happy. Pretty nifty I thought.

BS-3 M100

This is possibly the most deadly up close and personal anti-tank weapon ever developed. Forget your wire guided nonsense, this puppy has been in business since world war II and is still to be found at the hands of most of the ak47 wielding nutters knocking around today. You know who you are, Osama & mates....

Oh this is for the bots too, much like the previous two vehicles....

BIM-21 Grad

The Russians, it appears have been resupplying the Middle Eastern Coalition with some obsolete weapons. Quite a delivery too if you check in next week...! On a realistic note though, though the Soviets stopped producing these weapons platforms many years ago, but they are still to be found in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Eygpt, China, Chechyna, the usual crowd....
Its purpose really isnt to inflict damage, but to morally supress infantry charges and generally get everyone to keep their head down. Accuracy was not a major feature of this beast, but when 40 rockets come racing down your sightline, thats when you know that adrenaline is coloured brown.

[The wheels are not from either this or the BTR, but another vehicle yet to be revealed!evil laugh...Also the rear weapon is just there for show, the final version is much more detailed.]

BTR-152

Next time you have a look at an update of any other mod for any other game and you see a vehicle or weapon, take a note of its name and do an image search. Then compare what you're looking at and its 3D effort. Don't match up? Even remotely? Quel surprise...

As I get more experienced I find myself roaring "n00b" and other youthlike taunts at an inanimate monitor because of this laziness. I mentioned this before - it's poor research. Before I modelled this vehicle I spent hours getting good [1024 x 1280 min] images for reference and then drawing the plans, sections, and elevations in AutoCAD- then importing to 3dsMAX and began building. It was only halfway through when a detail was lacking that I resorted to Google Image Search....the last resort....really...

There I found a render of another mods same vehicle and was astonished. I had built the basic carcass and chassis of the vehicle for the same war ration budget of polygons they allowed and theirs doesn't remotely look like its supposed to. It might if you had BigDogs eyes, but I digress....
As far as I know, this is the only good looking moddable game engine that allows vehicle gameplay in a multiplayer environment since June 2005? Correct? So who hasn't upgraded even one gameplay component since then? huh? you at the back of the class, get out to the end of the room..The game and our PC's can take more punishment than was minimum recommendation 2 years ago, so lets push the game to its limit, I say.

Oh, the above vehicle is for the Bots, not us. It has two sticky mgs at the rear and one of the MEC tank mgs at the front. Don't get worried, its just another objective.....

Just a little note....

Just to let you all know that work on the update is going according to a non existant plan, but it will be an absolute belter when I get all the vehicles, aircraft and naval assets built and skinned. I have a "BOMSF Progress Report" around here somewhere that I must post up once the list of inclusions is final. Everytime I watch the history channel another idea for a crazy vehicle pops into me head and off I go to build it. The last update was on the handhelds, the next one will be on the vehicles, and this one I'm afraid, is the rather boring bit in between - but it has a purpose.

All of the assets ingame have a limit on how many polygons [how detailed roughly] a weapon building or vehicle can have. This limit is set by DICE and the BF2 game engine. We are gonna push that limit so that basic shit like wheels look less like smooth rocks, weapon scopes no longer look like they've been carved from a stick....etc etc.. So what I do is build things like wheel at a really high detail and take a snap shot of it. That snapshot of the detailed object now becomes the texture for the low detailed object, sort of like Danny DeVito and Arnie in Twins....or not. Somewhere in the middle you get a point where the player doesnt recognise whether the model looks realistic or not, they just carry on blowin stuff up. Heres a few shots of some of the vehicle wheels I've been working on. Each is for a different MEC 'thing'. All you have to do is name that 'thing' and I'll post up the finished vehicle!

Sneaky, I know.

Explosion effects, artillery sounds & explosions, whizzbys, a new map called "Poison Flow", 1 mega air asset and improving the MSG90 model have all been molested since the last update also.

p.s. congrats to Mr & Mrs. WallyJas, patron, on their recent nuptials.

I Promised.....

PapaVictorLima left me a comment that struck a chord with me. See below. I have never served, to my disgust, but turning the age of 30 I realise that at this age its too late to do anything about it. However, I love the military business generally, and have utmost respect for those who do violence on the part of the ordinary folk so that they can sleep easy in their beds. Following that logic, every weapon and vehicle that I build MUST be as close to reality as possible. I do not want the likes of ATnT getting excited because I made a sniper rilfe that looks like a stick with a toffee apple atop it. But - and there is a but - it is a game, loosely based on reality.

Having played S.T.AL.K.E.R. recently, I appreciate the quality they got with their weapons and so I'm tryin to replicate something similar.Spend, SPEND, spend.....polygon spend.....thats my ethos lately. So heres the skinny - handheld weapons 15 new. - armoured vehicles - 6 new - air assets - 5 new - stationary weapons 8 new. I will send you some links over the weekend showing the weapons. Ballpeen hammers etc.!

I need to go to bed. Plus - My county - Limerick - are in the all ireland final on sunday. if we win.....if we win.....i will be pissed DRUNK for a few months, and very lttle will be done. Have you folk ever heard of "hurling"....? the meanest sport on this planet? Fastest land sport in the world, and probably the dirtiest. Hooraaa! Sean South would be proud.

General Update

Ok, I've been putting off this post for a while but I have to say it. The weapon loadout that I've been working on for the mod update it pretty big - not to mention the vehicles that are to be included. The MK19 has been completely rebuilt because the first version is/was SHITE - one of my first crappy models - not afraid to say it. It'll be attached to the hummer top deck, and I have a map in mind solely for it. Weapon wise, there is the desert eagle, Uzi, Remington shotgun sst 870, Sterling, Steyr Aug, SA Grail, RKG-3, LAW, and a lot more I can't remember.

They're all built and some are in a near finish texture state - others are not even started for texturing. However, don't expect this update in the next fortnight. My house is taking all of my spare time, so it will be done when its done - around the 1st October. You're probably thinking that its a long way away given that its still July, but theres loads to be done on both my house and the weapons but it will be worth the wait.

There are also the air assets that WallyJas provided. They need to be coded, along with the mad naval assets we built. Also, Cobra managed to get the bots to lay mines and claymores, somehow! - That will have to go in methinks. Theres a whole bunch of other stuff too, and I think we're all looking forward to delivering a quality, and final update for the mod.

p.s. RedDog, If you ever push an update on the forums like this again, I'll head to the west coast of the States and throw you off whatever high horse you ride on!

Cookies and Milk for you if you can name the weapon and scope.

Quick update

Just a quick note to let you folks know that I have been working away quietly on lots of new goodies, but since spare time is usually limited to that precious hour in the day called "Lunch" it makes things sticky. I dont have time or the capability to do the coding well, so I'd rather leave it to someone else to let me get on with content creation.

I've also got some webspace and a domain name, so if I can get my act together with the mystery that is webpage design, I'll put up some proper gallery pages. Altogether there are 56 different projects in various states of completion, about half have had an outing on these pages, but for the lazy sods that can't be arsed to go back in pages, I'd like to give them a proper home.

Hopefully a few tutorials on building weapons/vehicles, texturing tricks, and other stuff that is only accessible generally if you go out and buy a sodding expensive book. Also note the weapons and such in BOMSF can and will be used in whatever game the clan decides to port to next. This stuff is for life.

If anybody would like to help me set up some web templates based on some designs I've got together, I would be extremely grateful.

...so where was I....

Much has happened since I last posted, Mrs. Bo and I are trying to organised our wedding, and fix up "ghetto cottage", our little tincan shithole we bought a few months ago. Theres loads of other stuff going on, not to mention the 3 reinstalls of xp and 2 of vista, and a mammoth upgrade. All is nearly back to normal, just have to get the editor going and we'll have this little number doing burnouts in no time!

I'll try to do as much as I can, I'd really like to get a few of the cars that are nearly finished into the BMR mod thingy.

Wrestling the Beast

No updates in the last week, courtesy of Windows Vista Home Premium edition. A friend asked me to install some stuff and hook up some printers, soundcards that kind of thing to his new HP unit which came with Vista installed. I was excited, I admit, but soon after the loading was done, the feeling of joy left quicker than a shithouse rat down a drain.

So this friend is an architect, artist, lecturer, bohemian type fellow and is more about getting the work done, and not worrying about how to install this, where are the drivers for that, and so on. So we grab his Photoshop and AutoCAD to install, only to be told to that AutoCAD 2008 at a mere 5000 earth monies, and Adobe CS2 at 1000 more, will be all you need to get you on your merry way. So if you happen to run a firm of 40 architects or engineers you will need to spend a quarter of a million upgrading to Vista. Wheres me old BitTorrent client I wondered……
Oh and that gets me onto another thing. Piracy. Since so many pieces of software have to be updated to run on vista, I’ll bet you a pint that this will be the year of the most downloads for pirates since Henry Morgan and his swashbuckling kin ruled the waves.

Currently I run a 3.65 Ghz Prescott Chip with 3Gigs of ram and a very trimmed startup list on XP. When she’s on, she idles at 340 odd megs of system ram occupied. My friends system, with the E6300 chip and 2 gigs of ram on vista runs at about 730 megs of system ram occupied whilst idling. That alone is friggin scarier than waking up with Osama in the bed beside you.

Now imagine having to reinstall all the maps for the mod and theres quite a few. Each time a new installation window that requires you to hit the “next” button pops up, it does it in the most pointless graphical gymnastics ever seen – by fading in and out while zooming at the same time, an effect that last looked funky in the Streets of San Francisco starring Michael Douglas and Knobbeldy Nose all those years ago. This gets extremely annoying after a while yet not as pointless as all those “Can your computer have permission to open this unknown piece of software called Microsoft Update?” And does this stupid interface remember your choice should you try to run it again? Not on your nelly. Mercifully you can knock this stuff off, but its not immediately clear, as the control panel has about forty odd icons, that now split every simple function into painful cheery sugar coated gaudy icons.

However, this is a benchmark in some ways similar to Windows 95, only that was software driven, and this is hardware driven. DX10 graphics cards etc. will only run on Vista. Drivers for this new hardware are so dodgy they make greasy haired second hand car dealers look like choirboys. Games, Test Drive Unlimited for instance, is so unsure of what DirectX platform it should honour, gets around this by being laggy and stuttery on nearly all platforms, even with high end systems. HP and Creative, two major companies who have a software autoupdate system, have some charming ways of telling you that your hard paid for hardware will not have a dedicated driver until Q3 this year. What a sloppy operation. So by years end the benchmark in the upgrade stakes will be the have-nots and the wish-they-hadn’t. Get saving now.

Administrator: The person with the rights to access all the files on the machine and funny enough, also the person that paid for the machine and Operation System? Not on Vista. Even if it reassures you that you are the Admin, its in name only. Changing the rights to allow yourself complete control over files in hidden directories is only available by going into the registry and bashing a few keys and dwords. Oh, and this isn’t possible on Home Premium, unless I upgrade as was suggested by the frustrating pop-up mother.

I get the feeling that there must be no power users working in R&D in Microsoft, no people with multiple screens, old printers or deadlines to hit. If there were, they would suddenly realise that patronising their customers with this “recipe collecting” approach to computing and organising their data is painful in the extreme. We don’t get into work and fool with email for an hour and play with the internet and go home. We are the people that treat regedit as a challenging playground, the internet as a means to an end, getting file formats to open in multiple apps backwards is an ease, and generally being very efficient in what we want to get done, done. Vista is a step backward, but if you wrestle with it enough, turn off the graphic nonsense and big brother/nervous mom popups, you’ll find you’re running a very compliant version of XP with DirectX 10 installed.

Research II

Just a quick note to let you know that I bought a 12 month subscription to armyrecognition.com, and though it isn't the most comprehensive coverage of world weapons and vehicles, the photos it does have are the excellent, with loads of up close and personal detail. So, with supplemental help from the BOM researchers, theres little to prevent the inclusion of the vehicle and weapon list I drew up a few weeks ago. Yeehaw! All I need now is 2 more modellers and a skinner and we'll get it all done in double quick time!

I suppose you're looking for news then....

Well I've been thinking about trying to update the page, but after careful review of my complete lack of knowledge of html etc., I decided to give it a miss, except for a few minor things.

Many of you guessed the not so subtle reference in yesterdays post to the 'rushian shubmarine commansher' - Sean Connery in Hunt for Red October, ...oh I wasn't going to bother but....

"The Soviet Typhoon-class submarine, on which the Red October is based, contains three pressure hulls, carries 20 ballistic missiles, and is 175 meters (574.1 feet) in length. This is a mere 5 meters (16.4 feet) longer than the American Ohio-class submarine, but has twice the amount of displacement." ....stickypedia

So with grateful thanks to the many researchers who assisted in finding good info for her, GiJackal in particular, I tried my hand at the Typhoon 941 class. She's nearly skinned, and you're probably wondering '..why go to the bother of building it 'cos battlefield 2 can't do submarines....blah blah blah'. Well, we've tested it using our own brand of genius and lunacy and it does work. Bigdog even modified the F35 to fly and shoot underwater and I have the video to prove it. [/evil laugh] Whats it gonna shoot at? Well, you'll just have to come back to find out when 'censored' finished.

Chaho Underway

Just a quick post to let y'all know whats going on. The boats are in Drydock and the AI has been tweaked, the textures, the weapons, the whole shootin' gallery. Had a blast in some custom naval maps with BigDog and Cobra. In a bit of a rush here, will post more info tomorrow. Note new AA mount on the rear of the 'boat'. Just made up, thanks to the research provided by jackal, eagle, mscd and a few others.

EC 135

No news, 'cept that BigDog is making some progress on the mortar from yesterday. Thought I'd show ya the [near] final new chopper before she goes to the paintshop. The stub wings at the back are the only "invented" item, and might be removed for the game. After that, the boats go to drydock.....

I would still like to have a crack at building a UH-1D, mount a couple of them M60's on the side.........

Bo
*EDIT* The blackhawk shown in wednesdays post is NOT mine. It is the stock BF2/Dice model. The wings with the Hydras and Hellfires etc. etc. will be the only thing added to the existing model. I don't have the energy to build a competely new version!

Incoming!!!

So I skinned this little harmless M120mm Mortar for the craic, then set up a botched hierarchy, got it into the Editor, and managed to get it to do some wonderful things, none of which help it to behave in a manner similar to that of its real world cousin. Stick to what you know applies here.....So I'll leave it to one of our illustrious coders to make it do its thing. This is one of those "on-the-bench" projects that I meant to finish some time ago.

In other news, the two boats are going into dry dock to be completely overhauled, especially to get the bots using them. It's something that bugs the snot out me, so I'll be focusing on that for the next day or two. We hope to throw a bit of a naval twist on things if it works out.

More screenies in the coming week.

Blackhawk Pylons

Zorkon - a member on the site has been in contact with me about some stuff and has offered/been beaten senseless to code some unusual weapons and things for us, so welcome aboard man. Heres what he asked to be made for him to get started, the stumpy wings that are attached to blackhawks with various weapon loadouts such as Hydras, miniguns, etc. hanging underneath. Lets see what madness he can do with them.......Nice to see the Blackhawks getting a rebirth.

Bo

Friday, March 16, 2007

Well, I had another idea about weapons while getting severely pwned last night on the vertigo map. Here I was - up top lobbing grenades like a madmen, only to get annoyed by the bots legging it off to get some cover whenever they saw one coming. Fine I thought, as I waited to respawn. How is it that every time they lob a 'nade at me it has a perfect flight path, longer throw distance, and always explodes the minute you see it....? So what the SEAL team needs, I said to myself, is a Percussion Grenade and not a Fragmentation Grenade! So with Wiki in hand off I went in search of said desturctive ordnance. Couldn't find a U.S. model, so I went with the RKG-3 H.E.A.T variety from Russian forces. Apparently its a current favorite of juvenile insurgents in Iraq as a video on YouTube will testify. Pretty devestating stuff. So I built it, but will code it such that its not like the FlashBang. More localized, and has the capability to put a tank out of action, much like the real thing.
Don't forget to drown the 'aul shamrock tomorrow, eh? I certainly wont.

Busy Busy Busy

Built a M120 mortar over lunch as I've been thinking of the need for support when capping a flag, yet without the possibility of being a whore-a-thon machine. If its part of a kit - i.e. throwkit for engineer, then it would have to be crew served - two people - one to aim and one to fire. Otherwise the abuse will be noticed on small cqb maps. The other option is to make it a standalone weapon thats on the map at the mapmakers discretion. Either way it would have to have a very slow rate of fire, so that ground pounders assaulting wouldn't be driven mad. So the sounds of impact will be a low thump, and hopefully a nice screaming sound as it lands.

Then theres the EC-135 for WallyJas which is nearing completion. I don't have the model to hand so heres a render taken about 4 weeks ago. Theres loads of other stuff going on at the mo' but i got to back to work! lol.

TIKKA

Sold commercially as the Tikka "Varmint" .308, this Finnish weapon is also available in a military flavour, featuring the ever popular and cranium destructing 7.62mm round. In a good low ping environment, this weapon can be a very trustworthy sidekick in the ever demanding battle against MEC forces.

LMAO!

Building the 9mm UZI at the minute, so I hope to have a few shots of her next week. Also looking at either the FN MAG or FN MINIMI para for the support role, so I'll draw her up over lunch in the next two weeks. Headin' to Prague for a few days, so I'll catch y'all up then.

They Haven't Gone Away - You Know.

An infamous comment made some years ago over here, but it represents the total lack of "musings" in the month of February from my end. There's the EC-135 that I'm trying to texture for WallyJas, umpteen amounts of various weapons that are started or near finished, building cars etc. for the BMR mod, and real life seriously getting in the way. Free time to do all this has been at an absolute premium this month, and renovating my new purchase - "Ghetto Cottage" hasn't helped.

Holding up the modelling end of things this month has been BigDog, producing content thats so good I was convinced he had "borrowed" someone elses work. Toyota Supra Castrols, RX8's, Rally Cars, you name it, and I'm sure he'll advertise it when he's ready to. Talk about dedication to the learning of 3D over such a short period of time.

So enough of all this ying yang, and on with the show. The FN FAL or L1A1 variant, an iconic Self Loading Rifle from the seventies, makes an appearance. I've always liked the look of it, though I've yet to decide who to give it to. When the second tier list of weapons is complete, I'll no doubt ask for opinions on the forums. Thats all, I'll try and finish more stuff this week.

Reference Material

Thats the thing about modding or even building stuff in 3D for a game. The material you assemble before you begin drawing or building is key to getting right, unless you want the wrath of the experts on your ass. Thats what you gotta respect from the larger mod teams who research in detail the differences between the MkII and MkIII version of a weapon or tank. So thats why I put a pause on the FIM92, because there are two things that are wrong with the modding scene.. 1: is there only one arms manufacturer of handheld surface-to-air missiles in the world, and 2: why are there bugger all photos and whatnot on the internet? I'm not the first to ask this deeply philosophical question......

Anyhow, the M72 LAW needed to be built - enjoyed its idea since Operation Flashpoint. One Shot - One Kill, and thats the way it'll be coded for the next release. It won't have 3 reloads or anything, its just for those brown pants moments when you come 'round a corner and see a T72 and all you have is a knife in your hand....So I'll paint it tomorrow and code the projectile and main weapon on Friday. Tomorrow involves a a bit of work on the R-17VTO Aerofon....

General Update

I built this bike about seven months ago when I was very green to the "modelling for a mod" scene. I had built literally hundreds of 3D models for work, but never anything dynamic like this, so I'm thinking of rebuilding it from scratch, with a bit more awareness of polygon limits.

[ A polygon is a triangle. Two make a square surface. A cylinder might take up to 48 to build and theres a limit in the BF2 to how many you can use for a weapon, vehicle, etc.......]

Plus, I don't particularly like the skin either, early attempts and all that! Its based [loosely] on the one on the bottom right hand corner of this page....

Moving on....I'm in the process of deciding what to build for the next mod update, not forgetting the two boats and three cars that still need coding love. I've picked a few new handheld weapons that didn't make into the last update but are built or drawn, to work on in the coming weeks - FIM92 [above], Steyr Aug, XM8, and the desert eagle. There are also a few large weapons, and should my luck with coding vehicles change, I'll have a crack at some dedicated Special Forces armoured fighting vehicles. Nah, I'll build them and get BigDog to export and code them....haha.

If we can find ways to code some of the more peculiar vehicles, the next update should be outstanding. I'll post a list when I have my workflow organised.

I told a lie....

A big fat one actually. As you know, the mod was released last night and was extremely successful. No crashes, no problems, and people would appear to be relatively happy with it. Now I thought I along with Cobra and BigDog, would have a break for a while and get back to playing. I thought that was us for a while. Not so. I started on coding the OCC109 Chopper that I built a few months ago, and BigDog coded some roadlights in the game for some nightmaps. No doubt Cobra is working on a new map or four.

Seems like the blog will be updated as usual then!

Lost In Translation

"Nägel mit Köpfen machen" is not an expression I am familiar with. Though I asked my friend Romy from Leipzig, and she told me straight away. It means that one will honour his/her commitment to whatever he or she has said. Straight up, it means that what we have promised, we have delivered. It is an unusual thing to say, yet I respect the German logic, especially when you consider that a hell of a lot of the content in the new mod is german by design. Halo wie gehts, I say!

I would like to thank the many German bf2 sites who have promoted this mod without being asked to. It is uplifting to see the sites listed on the home page recurring time and time again, and people leaving positive comments. Danke!

Let us not forget the French sites also. I must apologise for "je ne parle pas bien francais" and it should be www.somua.com not .net . Je suis "human"!

No hay mucho site en espanol que sabe de BOMSF, pero espera que mucha gente jugais MultiplayerCoop en Espana. Vamos a ver. [lo siento por la qualidad de espanol]

There are no images to display today. Why not? Well you will find out on Sunday when the mod is released. It will be released at 3:00 CST, which is 9:00pm GMT.

There will not be many updates on the blog after this Mod Update - I have too much to do the house i bought, so i will be retiring from modding for at least 6 months. If there is at least 5 people who want tutorials on how to build, paint and code weapons, for BF2 or otherwise, please email me, and I'll make one up.

Thanks for stopping by.. Slan Leat

Calm before the Storm

Lordy, another hectic evening! My efforts with the icons was shortlived as bf2 started using our icons for everything with some very strange results. Rank insignia vanished, crosshairs turned into swastikas, you name it. 12 or so coffees later and it works. If you ever plan on modding, let a dedicated code basher do that stuff, or better still get someone else to do the damn thing.

Now, as for the rest of the stuff - RedDog, BigDog, Cobra & I have all been busy busting our heads with the graphic backgrounds, movies, icons...blah blah. Not very exciting, its like this -put four people in a room and you'll get five opinions! BigDog is doing some mad stuff with flash movies and its turning out really sweet. One final pass will be made on the mod content later to make sure its stable, and we'll polish off the graphic stuff tomorrow. Keep an eye out on the main site for graphic changes, as these mean we are getting closer to release.

Oh, and bonjouir a mes amis pour le site somua.net!
